In 2003, CMHA/PEI Division was contracted by the Department of Health and Social Services (the department) to conduct research into the support needs of people on Prince Edward Island with severe and persistent mental illness.
The purpose of this research was to:
- identify the principal support needs of people with serious and persistent mental illness and recommend strategies to address those needs and
- provide the department with the information necessary to assess the needs of this population and develop a support plan to meet those needs.
The data-gathering process took place in the fall of 2003 and the report Pain, Perseverance & Passion was produced for the department in the spring of 2004. The report was released to the public in August, 2004. In the fall of 2004, under the leadership of the department, a provincial, multi-sectoral (including consumers and family members) ‘Working Group’ was formed to examine the issues raised in the report and provide the department with recommendations that address the identified needs. The work of this committee continues today on the top priority issues.
